UPI, the Unified Payments Interface, is the real-time payment system run by NPCI. A customer pays straight from their bank account using any UPI app, by scanning the shop's QR code or entering its UPI ID. The money reaches the shop's linked account within seconds.
For shops, UPI is now the most common digital payment. Payments made from a bank account have not carried a merchant fee, which makes them cheaper than cards. The risk is fake screenshots and unconfirmed payments, so always check the payment has actually arrived before the customer leaves.
A ₹780 bill can be paid by showing a QR with the exact amount filled in, so the customer does not have to type it. The amount on the QR always matches the bill. Kownt X draws the UPI QR from your own UPI ID at the counter.
